ABC Wednesday

Todays letter is G

G is for....Grantchester (the Old Vicarage)

Just now the lilac is in bloom,
All before my little room;
And in my flower-beds, I think,
Smile the carnation and the pink;
And down the borders well I know,
The poppy and the pansy blow...
Oh! there the chestnuts, summer through,
Beside the river make for you
A tunnel of green gloom, and sleep
Deeply above; and green and deep
The stream mysterious glides beneath,
Green as a dream and deep as death.
-Oh, damn! I know it! and I know
How the May fields all golden show
And when the day is young and sweet,
Gild gloriously the bare feet
That run to bathe....
`Du lieber Goth`

..........Stands the Church Clock at ten to three?
And is there honey still for tea?
Rupert Brooke.

I love this poem, I think you can hear how home-sick he was when he wrote this, and you can almost feel the summer blossoming around you when you read it. I`ve just written the first verse, and the last tiny piece, which seems so typically English.

Lovely choice for today's letter. . .Green as a dream
And your baking from yesterday left me dreaming too.
Thanks for sharing!

It's the ultimate in nostalgia and longing, isn't it, that poem. I have always liked it, too.

On behalf of the team, thanks for taking part in ABC Wednesday this week! :)

You have so much beautiful history in England. I've never had the chance to visit so I enjoy seeing snippets here on the web. This week I went with geese. I just saw the first pair return. I invite you to come see. - Margy
