As it was my first day off, we decided to go to Lyme Regis for a change, its in Dorset the next county to us. Lyme Regis is famous for its fossils, the coastline is called the Jurrasic coast, and the cliffs are rich in fossils. Mary Anning 1799-1847 whose family lived in Lyme Regis found
the first complete skeleton of an Ichthyosaur, when she was a young woman, but her most important find from a scientific point of view was her discovery of the first Plesiosaur.
Lyme Regis is a lovely little old fasioned town, with quaint shops running down the hill to the sea.
It has this lovely little bridge over the river that runs out to the sea
The museum is in a beautiful old building with rather nice turret
At the bottom of the hill you have wonderful views down the Jurrasic coast, the cliffs undulating into the distance, it was moody and misty today
After pondering what secrets the cliffs held, we took a walk along the sea front
I loved the lamp posts with the fossil motives, and some of the houses had real character
and some were as pretty as a picture
and some very very old, this one dated from the 17th century
We walked down to the `Cobb` an ancient breakwater, this is where `The French Lieutenants Woman` was filmed.
We walked along the top of the break water, the wind had quite an edge to it..
I loved these old steps, but they look very dangerous
And on the old building, this poster on `Rates on Merchandise` dated June 30 1879
After that, we walked up the hill to the gardens, with nice views back to the Cobb
The gardens were only developed last year, and are very attractive
and along the path, I noticed a lovely patch of Celandines with a very busy bee
It was a lovely trip, and a good start to my days off...

What a beautiful blog of a glorious day! I have only been to Lyme Regis once and loved it.. and you brought it all back to me!
